Three Cost Effective Ways to Beat Boredom This Summer

Guest post by Nicky Wingate

Summer is here and it came so fast! If you are a kinship placement, you might be looking for a couple intentional ways to spend time as a family together this summer that are also cost effective.

Here are our top three ways we like to stay engaged over the summer.

Pools & Splash Pads

One of our favorite ways to spend time as a family over the summer is in the water. In Tucson it can be quite hot during the summer months and water is the perfect way to cool off.

  • This summer, all city pools have free admission for recreation/public swim. Just make sure you have the right hours and don't show up during adult lap swim.

  • Another fun water activity are the splash pads around town. Splash pads are such a fun way to get wet with a little less work than swimming. Make sure to bring a blanket or chair to sit in because sometimes seating is limited. Find a full list of Splash Pads at the bottom of the City of Tucson’s website.

I love these different water options because they are a free and fun way to beat the heat and get some energy out all at the same time.

Summer Movies

Another favorite pastime of ours during the summer are summer movies. These movies are shown at a discounted price and are fun for the entire family. Make sure to get your tickets ahead of time to reserve a seat. You’ll want to double check the showtimes and location since the shows and times differ per theater.

Pro Tip: If you can, buy your tickets in person to skip the online processing fee!

Reading Programs

The last summer fun idea I have for you are the summer reading programs. Summer reading is a great inside activity to do in the middle of the day when it is too hot to play outside.

  • Starting June 1st the public libraries will be doing their summer reading program and will be handing out a free book to each participant. Plan to visit a library that’s open on Saturday- or stop by soon after the following week to get signed up!

  • Read and record 8 books and Barnes and Noble has a list of free books you can pick from. The selections vary by age.

I hope these ideas help you to create memories this summer as well as provide some fun for everyone inside and outside.
